hygienist. was not armed at the time. so all of the shots that were fired -- and shots were fired if two different locations -- all of those shots were fired by law enfo enforcement officers. as i said, she had her 1-year-old child in the car with her when this happened. and we're told that the child will be okay, was taken to an a area hospital for observation but is expected to be just fine. and as far as the road closures, there were a number of them overnight, just a short time ago we got the word most of those roads have reopened. we have this one closure in the 100 block of constitution avenue. reporting live on capitol hill, megan mcgrath, news 4. back to you in the studio. right now the fbi and stamford, connecticut, police are combing through miriam carey's apartment looking for any clues as to what led to the shooting on capitol hill. molette green has more on that. that's right, aaron. authorities want to know everything they can about miriam carey, so they did, they went to her apartment in stamford, connecticut, to find answers as to why she came to washington with her 1-year-old child and

led authorities on this wild chase. the 34-year-old had a good relationship with her mother and her sisters. one of whom is a retired nypd sergeant. neighbors in her apartment complex don't know what to think. >> a little bit of fear, too. it's one of those situations where at the end of the day you really don't know your neighb s neighbors. it's an emotional thing especially when it's at your home. >> now there are many questions about carey's mental health. we're going to have more on that coming up in a bit. that's the latest from the live desk. back to you. >> molette, thank you. this morning one of the officers hurt during the crash is out of the hospital, expected to be fine after he crashed into a barrier. the capital officer, a 23-year veteran of the force slammed into security barriers that were near 1st and constitution, less than half of a mile from where the suspect's car crashed. that officer is waking up at home after being released from

around through 8:00, 9:00 this morning with sunshine and in the upper 60s by 10:00 should be in the mid-70s. the fog should be gone by then. then by noontime partly cloudy. into the low 80s. sun rises at 7:07. hometown forecast, allegheny county, cumberland, there by noontime should be partly sunny and in the upper 70s. a look at the rest of your friday and friday night coming in ten minutes. traffic now with danella. good morning, tom. well, here is what i'm track in if you're traveling the beltway, a couple of work zones look to be clear in prince george's county. you know there's overnight work. if you traveled anytime in the last week, the outer loop of the beltway, the earlier work zone, that looks to be gone. inner loop, there was a work zone for folks traveling between pennsylvania avenue heading to arena drive. again, that looks clear as well. we'll head back over to route 50 in virginia. eastbound lanes are blocked at 28. you'll be forced off at 28 and you'll have to continue your commute. you may want to consider jumping on 6 instead, active investigation is what's happening. may take some time to clean and

you can see quite a large response to this earlier crash. i'm going to keep tracking this for you. i'm back in ten minutes. 4:35 is your time now. we expect to learn this morning if congress will work through the weekend to try and end the government shutdown. right now the house is expected to be back on capitol hill at 10:00. and the senate will return at 10:30 for a second day some democrats also planned to rally with those affected by the stalemate. yesterday they protested with seniors. today they will demonstrate the with furloughed workers on capitol hill. the shutdown is about to hit the wallets of federal workers pretty hard. today is the last day they will receive a paycheck. student loans are stopping. the house will vote as soon as today on a measure to approve back pay for those furloughed, but they wouldn't receive the money until after the shutdown is over. and the labor department will not release its monthly jobs report today. it's usually an important indicator of the economic

recove recovery. the impact of the shutdown are starting to spread from paychecks to the prospect this debate could soon merge with the looming debt ceiling debate. tracie potts joins us live from capitol hill with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, aaron. we only have a few weeks until the debt ceiling debate gets under way. lawmakers trying to wrap this up. republicans are trying the strategy of a piece meal approach trying to pass bills to get individual parts of the government function iing again. they've already passed five of them. they have 11 more that they plan to vote on in the next few days. and while the workers that you were just talking about are certainly frustrate d getting their final paychecks today, lawmakers are getting frustrated, too. >> we should be dysfunctional government. there's no reason other than one man, speak er boehner. he doesn't have the courage to stand up to that small ban of anarchists. >> the president refuseses to

welcome back at 4:41. the naval academy feeling the effects of a government shutdown. more than half of its faculty furloughed because they are

civ civilians, more than 900 professors and other staff members. the academy trying to get military faculty to cover extra classes but it still has to cancel several classes including physics and engineering. the u.s. military academy at west point and the air force academy have had to furlough civilian employees. the shutdown may help prince william county residents put off paying their property taxes. the county board of supervisors will discuss next tuesday whether to delay collecting personal property taxes known as the car tax. about 45,000 federal workers live in prince william county. the taxes are technically due tomorrow, so residents might face a 10% late fee if the board votes down the emergency legislation. the national cathedral wants to help couples who had to cancel weddings because of a shutdown. its bishop is inviting couples to tie the knot at the bishop's garden. she says the ceremonies would be free as well. at least two dozen couples had to postpone their weddings which were supposed to take place at sites on the national mall.

on that. eun, happening today a deeper look inside the woman behind the capitol chase. reports say miriam carey suffered from postpartum depression after she had her baby daughter. that's the one thing investigators will look into among many others as they pinpoint exactly what set off this event that put the capitol on lockdown. the 34-year-old stamford, connecticut, mother was college educated with a degree. she worked as a former dental hygienist. >> nothing would have led us to think this would have happened. >> there are reports carey suffered head trauma after falling down some stairs. she began to suffer mental health issues after that. according to interviews with her family members. carey was eventually fired from her job in 2012. that is the latest from the live desk. the back to you.

>> a report of gunfire on capitol hill. >> that is the alarm that rang out inside the u.s. capitol moments after shots were fired. the capitol was put on lockdown for about an hour. all roads surrounding the capitol were shut down. tourists were told to leave the area. 13 before the hour. the grand canyon will remain closed. arizona governor jan brewer offered it to use state money to reopen the national park. the superintendent rejected her proposal. about 2,200 people who work at the grand canyon national park and its hotels have been furloughed. this is the second time the park has been closed since it was created in 1919. there's a fwroeg problgrowit our monuments. the sights are starting to get trash. there's no one on staff to empty the trash cans around the area. there won't be any trash

collection at any areas maintained by the national park service until the shutdown is over. a u.s. park ranger getting high-level support this morning after she took the brunt of a republican congressman's anger. >> how dowden them access? i don't get that. >> difficult. i'm sorry, sir. >> park service should be ashamed of themselves. >> i'm not ashamed. >> you should be. >> that was the confrontation between the ranger and texas representative randy neugebauer. last night vice president joe biden called that park ranger to tell her he's proud of her, a former worker who overheard the tense moment confronted in neugebauer for the shutdown. >> the government shutdown is having a big impact on the fairer sex. a new survey by shespeaks and lippe taylor shows that women have more negative feelings about the shutdown than men. 43% of women say they will spend less money tu to their concern about the shutdown and when had

it will end. 76% feel worse about the country's future and 73% believe congress should have agreed on a compromise by now. what does this mean for the future? 36% of women say they'll be voting differently next year because of this shutdown. one local restaurant is trying to do what congress hasn't been able to do, end the government shutdown. bus boys and poets is holding a special town hall meeting to find a way to end the shutdown. it's asking representatives from labor organizations to offer some strategies. this morning the weather warnings are out along the gulf coast as storm karen inches closer. it's 4:49. that storm could reach hurricane force by tonight and landfall tomorrow night. beach businesseses are closing up shop. you can see here workers are moving lifeguard stands and chairs off the beach as well. pump stations are being readied especially in flood prone neighborhoods. the white house says fema will recall some workers to had help prepare for the storm karen. employees will return to

headquarters here in d.c. and field offices ahong the gulf. they did not say how many fema workers will be heading back to work. it is now 4:50. while you've been seeing temperatures in the 80s, it's a very different story in montana. western parts of the state received 10 inches of snow, 10! knocking out power to many homes. a winter storm advisory stretched from the plains to the rockies and through montana. temperatures are expected to drop into the 20s. we are having summerlike weather. the poor folks in montana might like it. i won't say poor folks. >> that's true. that is one of the systems heading in this direction. we may have to deal with something next week, right? >> that is a front that will be bringing us some rain, needed rain, here by monday. this morning we're dealing with some fog around and certainly is looking like fall here even though it's feeling like summer. this photo sent in by anita from rockville posted to

weather@nbcwashington.com. love it when you share your weather and nature photos with us and also on twitter and facebook. and we do have the you a it tum autumn colors. closer to washington here in this area in the orange, western maryland, the highlands in west virginia, they have some moderate color there. closer to washington we have some spotty color, some moderate color beginning to show up in the shenandoah valley the next day or two. patchy fog is what we're dealing with. where temperatures are down to near 60 closer to washington don't have much fog around. temperatures in the low to mid-60s. look at our temperature graph like a roller coaster again, quickly climbing into the low 80s by noon hitting mid and upper 80s by midafternoon throughout much of the region under a partly cloudy sky. then for your friday night should be partly cloudy, 70s through the evening. high school and college games tomorrow, it'll be hot.

welcome back. a montgomery county high school teacher is out of jail after posting bond. he is accused of sexually abusing a student. he is on leave from einstein high school in kensington after being arrested wednesday afternoon. police say over the past school year he developed a relationship with a female student. the two sent explicit e-mails back and forth. police were notified by the girl's parent after finding the e-mails. police are looking are for the two men you see here in surveillance video. these thieves stormed into a nail salon in prince george's

county and robbed it. you can see the armed men bursting into the salon. they go through employees' drawers and their pockets. one of the men hits and kicks o one of the salon workers. the video was taken last month at a salon in district heights. today the national cathedral will host the movie premiere that documents the victim of a high-pr high-profile deadly hate crime. the film is called "matthew shepard is a friend of mine. "it marks 15 years since he was abducted, tied to a fence and beaten in a remote area of wyoming. shepard's parents will attend the premiere and speak about their son's legacy. the screening is part of a series at the cathedral to honor and remember lbgt youth who face hateful bullying, discrimination and violence. today in fairfax county a celebration for a couple making a warrior ride across the country here to washington, d.c. army veterans darryl and roseanne mooney started their bicycle journey in washington state back in june. they were riding to raise

awareness for wounded service members and those who suffer with conditions like ptsd. occoquan will hold an arrival ceremony tonight. the mooneys will finish their journey to washington sunday morning. the race for governor of virginia is still very tight. check out the new poll numbers. democrat terry mcauliffe leads cuccinelli by five points. libertarian robert sarvis received 8% of the vote. mcauliffe leads because he has so much support from african-american and women voters. riding metro could take long er this weekend. some busy stations in d.c. are about to chose. along the red line, union station, judiciary square and farragut north will close tonight. gallery place will only serve the yellow and green lines and metro center will only serve blue and orange line trains. you can expect delays as well on the blue, yellow and green lines although all the stations on those lines are will stay open. things should be back to normal by monday morning.
